Divine Saints are found in every religion. These are the holy men and women who inspire and bless humanity. Their virtues are repeated through the ages. In Greek, the word saint (hagios) means one who is set apart. Divine Saints are set apart from society at large. This allows them to maintain their sanctity. They can serve as teachers and healers to society as a whole. We are all blessed by the presence of saints in our midst. Sometimes Divine Saints are obvious and acquire great followings and even celebrity. At other times they work quietly in the background, unnoticed by those around them. Famous saints are remembered by special days in the calendar. An example is Saint Teresa of Avila, whose feast day is October 15 each year. But Divine Saints are not found only in the Catholic church. Other religions too have these great exemplars of virtue. Divine Saints are of great benefit to humanity. It is right that they should be honored in this way. So let us praise the Divine Saints among us, those known, and those unknown. We are all the richer for the heavenly blessing they shed, and we can but try to follow in their holy footsteps.
